MECH TORSO + HEAD and a new character illustration

Post by TitanSeraph on Sat 09 Nov 2013, 1:07 pm

So, Helia (Because I suck at names):
Spoiler:

Here, the whole thing was basically after a sketching practice with poses. Not overly happy with the face.

And for the mech. This is an unusual one for me since, out of animating, I've been used to making my finals in vector programs. Here, I went and did it all in SAI.
This is currently head and torso, with cheap shading. If someone wants to collab on it (e.g. working on the arms and legs and weapons/other parts from different people to give it a more exotic look while having bragging rights and stuff) contact me :)

And the workflow...which is mehish:
Spoiler:

Basic doodle of the idea. I had no idea what it was going to be at this stage

Sharpening of idea, putting in actual shapes

Deciding to redo a specific part, preparing to finish the idea

Inking the final overall shape

cheap shading and filling

Ironically enough, when I started, I was thinking of the russian mech in pacific rim.

Definately improving.
You just gotta lrn how to do ambient occulsion in your drawings.
ie; making the connecting points of locations dark and utilizing highlights to represent edges instead of ugly black lines.
Another thing you could try is to bump your canvas size.
I usually work in the quad-digits; ie 1200x1600 or 1600x1200
Although, lately, I've just been using my typical printer size which is about 3500x2500.

Another thing that would help is adding texture; alot of your pictures are very flat and seem to have little to no personality, adding textures would give a story to each surface. Then you should also try and differentiate the metal/cloth bits so that it adds more interesting things

Don't forget you have me on Steam too ;o;

This is quite ironic since an idea I had was to give this mech warhammer mech' like arms for a momment. And yes, MechWarrior is awesome XP
