It's not just a game. It was first a table top game, (board game) but the playing field is a whole table. There is also more than a dozen novels for it, aswell as being a video game (Dawn Of War, and Space Marine).

It's on a massive scale. Battles with thousands, sometimes millions of soldiers, over entire solar systems. Fleets of hundreds of ships patrolling entire sectors 2.

It's nothing like C&C actually. C&C is on a much smaller scale. Plus Warhammer is many differnt genres. It's RTS, and third person shooter. You don't need to be a RTS lover to like it. Also, it dosen't have tiberium, GDI, Nod, or the Scrin.
